Alexander Technique

What is it?

The Alexander Technique is a mind body process that helps you change habits either postural or mental. It is taught with verbal guidance and hands on contact to change the way one thinks and responds in activity.

The Alexander Technique teaches improved posture and movement, which is believed to help reduce and prevent problems caused by unhelpful habits. The main principles of the Alexander technique are:

  • how you move, sit and stand affects how well you function

  • the relationship of the head, neck and spine is fundamental to your ability to function optimally

  • becoming more mindful of the way you go about your daily activities is necessary to make changes and gain benefit

  • the mind and body work together intimately as one, each constantly influencing the other

During a number of lessons you're taught to be more aware of your body, how to improve poor posture and move more efficiently, to help get rid of tension in your body and relieve problems such as back pain, neck ache, sore shoulders and other musculoskeletal problems.

You are really unlearning and most people find it very therapeutic. You could compare it to learning how to ride a bike or play an instrument, but the instrument is yourself.

Who is it suitable for?

Whatever your age or ability, the Technique can help boost your performance in any activity and relieve the pain and stress caused by postural habits, like slouching or rounded shoulders.

Working with your teacher, you will learn to recognise your usual reactions to the stresses of life. You will find out how you have been contributing to your problems, how to prevent them and regain control.

Where can it help?

Alexander Technique can help people with a wide range of health conditions, for example:

  • Back, neck and joint pain

  • Muscle tension and stiffness

  • Poor posture

  • Breathing and vocal problems

  • Stress and stress-related conditions
